Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF) February 2015

Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta on February 12-15, 2015

The 19th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is being held on 12th to 15th February 2015 at Clark, Angeles City, Pampanga.

PIHABF is a gathering of aviators from the Philippines and the world.

What began as a passion project has now evolved into the longest-running sports aviation event in Asia. The fiesta’s longtime objective is to instill discipline in participating young pilots so they can develop into safe aviators, as well as to impart a spirit volunteerism and cooperation to the whole community.

The fiesta is an opportunity to share and exchange cultures and traditions with visiting pilots from all over the world. They are given a taste of Filipino hospitality and the fiesta spirit. We hope that their beautiful experience becomes the best advertising for Philippine tourism. We also encourage the visiting pilots to be contributors to chosen beneficiaries of the foundation.

Entrance Fee:

You can get your tickets at the front gate. Free entrance is available for each PhP300 contribution to the Foundation’s advocacy of sending deserving students through aviation-related courses.

Currently, (Nov 2014), these contributions are accepted through PayPal — a world-leader in online payment. To avail of this service, you have to be 18 years of age and have either a major credit or debit card, or Paypal account.

Tickets: www.philballoonfest.net

Getting to the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta by Public Transport

Clark is approximately 80km north of Manila and may be reached by land or air. Public buses travel on a daily basis. Ride a Victory Liner bus bound for Dagupan and go down at Dau common terminal. Walk a bit towards the highway where jeepneys or tricycle are available. These public utility vehicles can take you to Clark.

Getting to the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta by Car

Getting to the Clark Freeport Zone, otherwise known as the Clark Special Economic Zone, by car is easy. Simply take the North Luzon Expressway from Manila and exit at Dau, Mabalacat. After your exit, a left turn towards Angeles City, and a little Angeles City/Dau traffic, will bring you to within an easy right turn of the Clark Zone itself. The trip should take about an hour and a half from Manila without heavy traffic.

MV ALMA JANE, Puerto Galera Dive Site

The ‘MV Alma Jane Express’ is a former Japanese Cargo Ship that was specifically sunk in Puerto Galera in 2003 with the intention of becoming a dive site, and home to colourful reef fishes and soft coral.

It now sits about 30 metres below the surface, just off the La Laguna beaches at Sabang, and is one of the popular dive sites in Puerto Galera.

All Souls Regatta, Puerto Galera

The annual All Souls Regatta was organized first in 2004 with two objectives:

  • to provide the Philippine sailing community with a fun regatta at the start of the competitive sailing season; and,
  • to kick-start the holiday season in Puerto Galera a month earlier than usual.

In both objectives it has been a resounding success.

All Souls day in the Philippines is the 1st of November and traditionally a non-working holiday, so became a good day to hold this event.

The All Souls Regatta is organized by a long-time cruising yacht club of the Philippines, the Puerto Galera Yacht Club.

The following is sourced from the PGYC website:

Everyone is encouraged to enter into the spirit of the sport of sailing and to share their yachts with the many visitors who front up at the club for the Skipper’s Briefing.

All of the racing is organized under the Racing Rules of Sailing using the Puerto Galera Yardstick (PGY) handicap system, which rates performance above theoretical dimensional criteria.

All races are based on the pursuit race format, which means that yachts each have a different starting time based upon their PGY handicap, which is calculated such that all yachts that perform equally well, should cross the finish line together. Bow to bow competition is often evident within the last half mile on the approach to traditional finish line off Haligi Beach.

After the racing everyone knows who won the race for the day so there is no waiting before the party starts. The (usually) free kegs of beer are opened and everyone is encouraged to return to the clubhouse to rib the suitably thick-skinned handicapper for their variable performance on the day.

The All Souls Regatta is the largest annual gathering of sailing yachts in the Philippines and, apart from the IRC Class yachts (who battle seriously for bragging rights), all sailors come here with one objective: to sail with intent.

Yacht Owners

If you own a yacht and want to see how she may compete in the friendliest sailing event on the planet at Halloween then you should come to the All Souls Regatta. The entry fees are minimal and the fun factor is off the charts. If you do not have a crew then do not worry, there are always crew available at the All Souls Regatta, just waiting for the chance to help out . . . and they usually bring along a six-pack to help with the ship’s stores.

Experienced Crew Without Yachts

If you do not have a yacht in the Philippines, and if you do not want to bring one with you, then no problem. The yacht club will make sure you get a crew place on a yacht that matches your experience. Yacht owners will accept you aboard if you help out with drinks and munchies for the day on the water.

Newbie & Wannabe Sailors

Whether you are a newbie or a wannabe there is always a yacht with space for you to come along and try out the healthiest sport on the water at the friendliest sailing event on the planet at Halloween. If you know how to fetch & carry a six-pack of beer or a bottle of wine then you will be welcomed aboard at the All Souls Regatta.

Tukuran Falls, Puerto Galera

The Tukuran Falls are also known as the hidden paradise. It may involve a Carabao ride to get there, and that is after the boat ride, and not forgetting the six rivers you have to cross.

The Carabao ride is actually a Carabao pulling a cart, for a 15 minute trip, but you could walk if you… No… not me 🙂

Agbalala Falls, Puerto Galera

Agbalala Falls is not actually in Puerto Galera, but it is a popular spot for some to make the trip to visit.

It may take an hour or two to get there from Puerto Galera, using a boat first. It is on the way West, towards Occidental Mindoro.

A video of these falls is shown on youtube here:

Ponderosa Golf Course, Puerto Galera

The Ponderosa Golf Club in Puerto Galera has a really good view from this photo.

Ponderosa Golf Club

Although only a 9 hole course, there is also a second tee position for each hole should players like to play a full 18 holes. It is quoted as being “Essentially a 9 hole par 3 course with attitude

This may be an interesting golf course, as it is strategically spread over a few hectares of steep mountain-side and in some places the fairways literally plunge from tee to green. Despite the fact that transportation is by your own two feet you could be forgiven for thinking that a round of golf here is more akin to a steep roller-coaster ride than the usual stroll around manicured fairways and greens.

It is also 2,000 feet above sea level.

Are YOU game for a game ?

Or… Is this more your thing…

The clubhouse offers a selection of snacks, meals, cold drinks, alcoholic beverages and otherwise, with sunsets to die for.

Ponderosa is swept by cool sea breezes year-round and is also a popular destination for hikers, bird-watchers and mountain biking enthusiasts.
