Filipino Victory In Battle of Mabitac – September 17, 1900

September 17 marks the annual celebration of the Battle of Mabitac, where Filipino soldiers defeated an American force during the Filipino – American War of 1899-1902.

The Battle of Mabitac, which took place on September 17, 1900, was an engagement in the Philippine-American War where a troop of Filipino guerrillas led by General Juan Cailles defeated the advancing American force led by Colonel Benjamin Cheatham, Jr.

The US forces numbered about 300 from the 37th and 15th U.S. Volunteer Infantry. The US losses were 21 killed, 23 wounded, according to US claims or 180 dead and wounded according to Filipino estimates.

The Filipino forces numbered between 300 (Filipino claim) and 800 (US Estimate). The Filipino losses were 11 killed, 20 wounded according to US claims or 2 dead and 3 wounded according to Filipino claims.

The population in the Philippines has almost doubled during they last 30 years, between 1980 and 2010, but the increase has not been an even spread across the country. The Calabarzon region has seen the largest increase, with a change from 4.6 million to 12.6 million population, a 174% increase. The region with the smallest rise was Eastern Visayas with a change from 2.8 million population up to 4.1 million, a rise of just 47%.

It is estimated that the next 30 years, from 2010 to 2040, will show an increase from 92.3 million to about 141 million or about a 52% increase. This is a much slower rate of population growth than the last 30 years. IF the population grows at the SAME rate as 1980 to 2010, then the population of the Philippines would reach 177 million by 2040.

Magellan’s Cross, Cebu

Magellan’s Cross is a Christian cross that Ferdinand Magellan (c1480 – 27 April 1521) ordered to be erected in Cebu on 21 April 1521 after the successful baptism of many natives into Christianity.

Ferdinand Magellan was also known as: Fernao Magalhaes or Fernando Magallanes, and was a Portuguese navigator working for the King of Spain.

The cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino on Magallanes Street, just in front of the city center of Cebu City.

The original cross is reputedly encased inside another wooden cross for protection, as people started chipping it away in the belief that it had miraculous healing powers. This prompted the government officials to encase it in tindalo wood and secured it inside a small chapel. www.hawaii.edu/cps/magellancross.html

Some people, however, believe that the original cross had been destroyed or had disappeared after Magellan’s death, and the cross is a replica that was planted there by the Spaniards after they successfully colonized the Philippines.

A computer genius named Finch developed a machine for the government that is used to detect information leading to acts of terrorism before they happen.

The machine separates the information gathered into two categories: relevant and irrelevant.
Finch, however, discovered that the irrelevant information often led to other acts of violent crime. So, he, before going underground, developed a back door into the system which only spits out the social security number of a central person involved in the crime.

Supposedly dead in the authority’s eyes, Finch hires John Reese, an ex-CIA special operations agent, who had also dropped out of life after his girlfriend was killed as the result of a professional incident, and he was dissatisfied with the government’s handling of the situation. Like Finch, Reese is officially listed as dead. Finch convinces Reese that working for him to prevent the crime associated with the social security number..
